Medicina 33 – Antonini and Martini: Prostatectomy and Prosthesis at San Filippo Neri in Rome
On 12 May, Tg2’s historic column Medicina 33 will broadcast a report on a new and innovative collaboration between two excellences of Italian urology: Professor Marco Martini, director of the Urology Operative Unit at the San Filippo Neri Hospital in Rome, and Professor Gabriele Antonini, a highly experienced urologist-andrologist, who also works at the same facility.
The focus of the service will be the new combined approach involving the simultaneous implantation of a three-component hydraulic penile prosthesis during robotic radical prostatectomy surgery, a procedure that represents a real revolution in functional urological surgery.
This innovative strategy was developed for patients with locally advanced prostate cancer who are destined to undergo prostate removal with a high probability of developing post-operative erectile dysfunction. Simultaneous implantation of the prosthesis during surgery allows early preservation and recovery of sexual function, with a positive impact on the patient’s quality of life and psychological health.
Dr Antonini points out that after prostatectomy, in the absence of targeted intervention, the penis tends to shorten by about half a centimetre per year. In addition, the long and often frustrating rehabilitation pathway.
